Daytime Leisure in Bangkok
If you notice the straight waterways (canals) on maps, you will be amazed at the extent of the coverage. In old Siam, transport was by canal boat rather than road, which is why the earliest Western explorers called Siam "the Venice of the east". Actually, Thailand's canal networks predate Venice, with some networks dating back 5000 years, moats and all. Nearly all the canals you see on maps are originally from well before modern times. Now, however, only a few are used for transport. To get a feel for ancient Siam, see our page in the transport section on มือถือฟรี, which is a mix of commercial, tourist and lingering indigenous routes.
The Chatuchak Market has been a favorite place to go for people new to Bangkok. More vendors are active on the weekends, so it's often called a "weekend" market. It's located in somewhat northern Bangkok, and the last stop of the skytrain is very close to it.
The Children's Museum is very nice for those who have young children. My daughter loved the place. It's very interactive, e.g., dress up like a doctor and operate on a plastic patient; dress up like a fireman and get on a scaled down fire truck; go to the a grocery store with a real bar code reader and computer, whereby kids can shop and one can run the check out counter; and much more. It's located half a kilometer from the Mochit skytrain station, near the Chatuchak Market and the Mo Chit bus terminal. It's not the easiest place to find, so make sure you print the map of their location, and a taxi is recommended for many expats -- hand them the map from the website. If the taxi doesn't know, then find one which does. Unfortunately, the website is sometimes down, but here it is: www.BKKChildrenMuseum.com
Safari World in Minburi is a drive-thru park with giraffes, zebras, ostriches, lions, tigers, and lots of other exotic animals. Also sports dolphin shows, trained bears and primates, and circus like skits. The website was down last time I tried, but here it is: www.SafariWorld.com
The Queen Sirikit National Convention Center is centrally located on Asoke (Sukhumvit 21 between Sukhumvit and Rama 4 Rd.) and has professional exhibitions as well as entertainment which come and go. Check out the schedule on the website at www.qsncc.co.th
Impact Arena is best known to some people for its nighttime concerts, but it also has a wide assortment of interesting exhibits. Check the schedule on their website, www.impact.co.th choosing "What's News" off the home page. They're located right off the western elevated expressway in northern Bangkok, in Muang Thong Thani.
