This page was written around the year 2000, but I will be updating it around the New Year, January 1, 2008. So much has changed, including webcasts, and I will report what's hot (and what's not), including on-line music guides, webcasts oriented towards tourists and expats, and something creative which I think you will be interested in ... though the latter might not be ready until February or so.
Thailand has been a leader in Asia in commercial radio for decades, according to international travellers of another era. Since Thais love "sanuk", radio is quite popular in the Land of Smiles. However, foreigners could use a guide to radio.
First, below is a partial list of FM radio stations in the Bangkok area. At the moment, it's a list only of stations that also broadcast by Internet, and strongly biased towards the trendy new generation -- pop. Some of my Thai friends' favorite stations are not listed. The list is also obviously incomplete in that I haven't reviewed the styles yet. I'll update this page if there's demand.
Note that if you're not in Thailand, you can still listen to many Thai radio stations via Internet, thanks to Thaicast and Intercast, as referenced in and beneath the table. If you're in Thailand, you might get better performance if you use Loxinfo as your dial-up ISP for Intercast, or KSC for Thaicast. Intercast worked better on my ISP (Internet Thailand) and PC. (Intercast plays files on RealPlayer, whereas Thaicast plays them on Windows Media Player, on my PC.) However, those in Thailand will, of course, get better quality with a regular radio with antenna because the limited Internet bandwidth in Thailand means reduction in quality of streaming audio.
ThaiCast's page on Internet radio stations, TV and clips is at มือถือฟรีhttp://www.thaicast.com/radio/live_radio.asp?column=LiveBroadcast . It's mainly in Thai script (well coded, really comes up as Thai script on my English Windows) but has enough English to be fairly useful. It also offers some pop hits to sample, which my Thai friends love.
Loxinfo's InterCast page with Internet radio and TV broadcasts was almost entirely in English and romanized Thai as of July 2000, and is also richer in resources than the ThaiCast page (in my opinion, as of July 2000), at http://www.intercast.loxinfo.co.th/ . However, the Loxinfo links often have Thai script that's not coded well, i.e., you'd better have the Thai Windows or else a Thai font loaded as the default. Has some song samples in some of the links.
